The desire to live longer is ubiquitous in today’s society. Research in biogerontology has long been seeking ways to enable people to lead healthy lives for longer. But is this really sensible, given the quality of care provided in elderly care? Already today, demographic change means that older people are being cared for less in their own homes and increasingly in care homes. This makes it more difficult for older people to maintain their relational and intrapersonal dignity as they age. What impact would artificially prolonging life have on this trend? Should it be regarded as an opportunity or a risk for ageing with dignity?
