Hasta el trabajo de Newton, estas preguntas eran meros temas de especulación filosófica. Desde entonces hemos aprendido mucho sobre el tiempo y su estudio ha dejado de ser asunto de la reflexión filosófica para pasar a formar parte de las materias de la física.Esta breve introducción presenta a los lectores una comprensión física actual del sentido del tiempo, desde la Segunda Ley de la Termodinámica hasta la aparición de la complejidad y la vida. Jenann Ismael traza la línea de desarrollo de la teoría física desde Newton, pasando por la Teoría de la Relatividad de Einstein, hasta nuestros días. Las innovaciones de Einstein condujeron a una visión muy diferente al sentido cotidiano del tiempo, en la que se lo entiende como una de las dimensiones en las que se extiende el universo. Este aparece entonces como un bloque estático de acontecimientos, en el que el pasado y el futuro no son más diferentes que el este y el oeste. Al analizar la controversia y la confusión filosófica que rodearon la recepción de esta nueva visión, Ismael también revisa la mezcla contemporánea entre mecánica estadística, ciencia cognitiva y fenomenología que conforma el camino a seguir para reconciliar el sentido familiar del tiempo con la visión propuesta en las teorías de Einstein.
